Beginner's guide
New to boxing or kickboxing?
Feeling unsure is completely normal, and the answer to your question is probably here. We've put together everything you need to know about fitness, age, your first class, sparring, equipment and goals, in plain language.
Before you start
I've never done a combat sport. Can I really start?
Absolutely. Most people who take up boxing or kickboxing start from zero. In your first class we look at your training background, and every technique is taught from the basics at a controlled pace.
My fitness is really poor. Should I get in shape first?
No. You come here to get in shape, not the other way round. Sessions are scaled to your level, and nobody will push you to keep up with someone else's pace.
Is there an age limit for boxing or kickboxing?
There's no fixed upper age limit. Intensity is adjusted to your age, health and goals. What matters is progressing steadily and in a controlled way.
Can children and teenagers join?
Boxing and kickboxing help children and teenagers build discipline, confidence and coordination. Message us on WhatsApp for age-appropriate options.
Is it suitable for women?
Yes. Boxing and kickboxing are great for fitness, strength, confidence and self-defence, for women as much as anyone. Training is always planned around your level and goals.
I have a health condition. Can I still start?
If you have a chronic condition, a recent injury or surgery, please check with your doctor first. Let us know in our first conversation and we'll plan your training around it.
Your first class
What happens in the first class?
We start by getting to know you and talking about your goals. Then we warm up and work on your guard, the basic punches and footwork. The pace is set entirely by your level.
What should I bring to a trial class?
Comfortable sportswear, clean indoor trainers, a towel and water. We can talk about gloves when you message us.
How do I book a trial class?
Just send us a message on WhatsApp and we'll find a day and time that works for you.
Training and safety
Do I have to fight or spar?
No. Many people train purely for technique and fitness. Sparring only comes up when you want it and feel ready, and it's always controlled.
Will I get injured?
As with any sport the risk is never zero, but a proper warm-up, correct technique and a sensible training load keep it to a minimum. There's no partner contact when you're starting out.
Do I need my own equipment?
Not for your first class. Once you train regularly we recommend getting your own gloves and hand wraps for hygiene, and we're happy to help you choose.
